The American Time Use Survey (ATUS) is a continuous federal survey measuring how, where, and with whom Americans spend their 24-hour days. Roughly 26,000 individuals aged 15 and older are sampled annually.
One category of out-of-home activities the ATUS tracks is time spend at arts and entertainment venues including performing arts, museums, cinemas, gambling establishments, amusement parks, LBEs, festival, fairs, and related activities (not including sports).
It appears the Covid pandemic has had a long-term impact on the time people spend at arts and entertainment venues. The average time spent by ages 15+ in 2018 and 2019 was 5.4 minutes per day, or 2 hours, 44 minutes a month. In 2025, it was one-third less, 55 minutes less, down to 1 hour, 50 minutes per month.

Every age group is spending less time at arts and entertainment venues than per-pandemic other than ages 65+.

In next month's issue we'll dig into this trend further.
