President Bush recently signed a bill requiring toys to be tested for safety before they can be sold. The ban includes several types of plastics, including those with phthalates, an ingredient linked to reproductive problems.
To reduce contact with these chemicals before the ban takes place, Environment California suggests looking for plastics labeled PVC-free or marked with recycling codes #1, #2 or #5. Attend the 2009 Institute on Creating Sustainable Environments to learn more about how to choose nontoxic toys:
