Report on greening America's schools: costs and benefits

So how much more does it cost to build a "green" school than a conventional one? A recent national report documented the difference, which turns out to be minimal - especially when weighed against the benefits.

Public school officials such as early childhood administrators have been discouraged over the last 10 years about green construction because of concerns over costs and a lack of information on the financial benefits of green buildings.

This report documents the financial costs and benefits of green schools compared to conventional schools. This national review of 30 green schools demonstrates that green schools cost less than 2% more than conventional schools in construction costs -- or about $3 per square foot -- but provide financial benefits that are 20 times as great.
