On November 10th, our company conducted a nationwide survey of 1,078 people on their households' participation in different agritourism activities, including festivals, u-pick, farm markets, and other activities since the beginning of 2023. In our previous issue, we reported that more than three-quarters of American households (76%) had at least one member visit a farm or ranch in 2023 for an agritourism activity, with the most popular at 44% of at least one household member attending a fall festival with a corn maze and/or pumpkin patch.
This issue we're reporting on the popularity of u-pick. In 2023, at least one member from six in ten U.S. households picked a U-pick crop (excluding U-pick pumpkins).
The most popular U-pick crop is apples, with nearly one-third of households participating (32%). Strawberries came in second, with over one-quarter (27%) of households participating. Peaches and blueberries were tied with one-sixth of households (16%), followed by cherries and flowers (including sunflowers) at over one-tenth, 12%, and 11%, respectively.
Four percent of households picked other crops, including other types of berries, corn, oranges, pears, potatoes, tomatoes, and assorted vegetables.
Farm markets were also very popular. Someone from 40% of U.S. households shopped at a farm market in 2023.
In our next issue, we'll report on participation in crop-based food festivals. If you haven't subscribed to this Agritourism Today enewsletter, sign up so you won't miss out. Subscribe by clicking HERE.
