Nonalcoholic beverages are now a mainstream category

The North American sober-curious movement has transformed the non-alcoholic beverage landscape over the past few years, turning what was once a niche into a rapidly scaling mainstream category. Non-alcoholic categories have seen striking growth over the past three years. Many sober-curious consumers still drink frequently but are actively rebalancing their occasions, choosing NA options for weeknights, work-related socializing, wellness-oriented gatherings, and daytime events, while reserving alcohol for fewer, more intentional moments. Many consumers often “zebra-stripe” - alternating between alcoholic and zero-proof drinks across occasions.

Sober-curious consumers cite concerns about cancer and cardiovascular risk, sleep and mental health, interactions with GLP-1 medications, and a desire to feel in control at work events and social gatherings. Younger generations, in particular, are redefining what “going out” means, prioritizing experience over intoxication and expecting inclusive options for those who avoid alcohol for cultural or personal reasons.;

North American nonalcoholic beer is the clearest example of this shift. NA beer sales have increased by 75% over the past three years, making zero-proof beer the standout growth category within the beer category.

Non‑alcoholic wine is smaller but steadily growing. NA wine revenue has increased by 25–30% over the past three years, driven by dealcoholized styles that preserve traditional wine rituals without the alcohol.

Zero-proof spirits and cocktail bases are the latest trend. In the US, non-alcoholic spirits have grown by roughly 50% over the past three years, as bar programs and RTD (ready-to-drink) mocktails have moved from token offerings to core menu items.

Together, these numbers show that the sober curious trend is not a passing fad but a structural rebalancing of how North Americans drink and a core driver of the future in socializing-oriented beverages. For location-based entertainment operators, especially social eatertainment and competitive socializing venues, zero-proof beer is now a must-have. Non-alcoholic wine offers steady incremental upside, while crafted zero-proof cocktails provide a fast-growing platform for differentiating the guest experience.
