Ways to be energy conscious and save $$$

Choosing compact fluorescent bulbs for your childcare facility not only saves you money in your utility budget, it helps the environment by reducing greenhouse emission.

We like to use different types of lighting sources in early childhood centers, but in choosing lighting, it's important to be aware of the consequences of those choices. For example, replace one incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb, and you'll see the following results:

• Compact fluorescent bulbs use one-third the energy
• Compact fluorescent bulbs generate 70% less heat than standard light bulbs and may last up to 10 times longer
• Save $30 in energy costs during the life of the product when replacing a 60-watt standard bulb or $41 when replacing a 100-watt bulb
• Eliminate 440 pounds of greenhouse emission when used to replace one standard 60-watt bulb

Lighting costs are a significant portion of the utility budget in most centers, depending on location and times of operation. This is a chance not only to save money but to do something great for the environment.
